First Art is een reizend onderzoeksproject waarin er tien First Art Kits naar kunstenaars over de hele wereld worden gestuurd in een poging de conditie van de beeldende kunst in kaart te brengen. Aan de ontvangende kunstenaars wordt gevraagd een (beeldend) antwoord te geven op de vraag “Hoe urgent is kunst?”.
Een First Art Kit is een koffer, vormgegeven zoals een First Aid Kit, gevuld met basismateriaal om op een openbare locatie een instant kunstwerk te kunnen maken. Op de koffer bevindt zich een stikker met de volgende tekst:
Imagine this: you have stranded on a desert island and you are in urgent need of art. Luckily you brought a ‘First Art Kit’. First Art Kit is an elementary package containing basic materials to instantly create a work of art in any distressed situation. First Art Kit will help you mentally survive.
First Art Kit has been sent to you by a fellow artist who believes that you could be excellent in providing first aid in case of absence of art. For yourself, your surrounding, or for a specific situation in your neighbourhood. We challenge you to make an artwork with the content of the First Art Kit within six weeks for a location that is in need of art.
We invite you to document your work and process, and mail your pictures or films to: work@firstart.nl after which it will be placed on the First Art website.
Please fill up the Kit after you have used it with materials of your choice. Sent the First Art Kit to a new fellow artist and mail us who will receive the Kit next.
